High five with Justin Wheeler
Had a chance to catch up with wide receiver Justin Wheeler at Monday's press conference, and here are five things we learned:
1. That deep down, the Commodores are loving their 5-0 start.
"The buzz is great because it's the first time we've really experienced it since I've been here," Wheeler said. "To be put in the national spotlight like that, it was different and I enjoyed it, our program enjoyed it."
2. That Wheeler has great chemistry with quarterback Mackenzi Adams.
Wheeler caught a career-high five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown in Vanderbilt's 14-13 victory over Auburn, and it's no coincidence that it came with Adams at quarterback. The two were on the scout team together in 2005.
"What he did out there was what he does every day in practice so I wasn't surprised," Wheeler said. "It's just the fact that he finally got a chance to display his skills, and I'm happy for him."
Wheeler has two career touchdowns, the first one coming last year against South Carolina with Adams under center.
"(The touchdown over the middle on Saturday) looked very similar, but the South Carolina game was a slant and that one was kind of like a deep, deep in route," Wheeler said.
3. That Vanderbilt isn't worried about reaching the magical six-win mark.
The Commodores have bigger goals in mind, and as ESPN.com's Chris Low writes in this mailbag, winning the SEC East isn't as crazy as it sounds.
"If you focus on six wins, then you'll probably get five, six or seven," Wheeler said, "but if you focus on trying to get 12 wins, you might end up with 10, 11, nine."
4. That the Vanderbilt coaching staff doesn't sleep.
"We come to practice on Sunday, and they've already got the game plan for Mississippi State, and the game was like eight hours ago," Wheeler said. "I'm like, do ya'll sleep or are ya'll taking power naps or what goes on in the office? It's great."
Gotta love how much time the coaches spend preparing, and how much the players appreciate it.
5. That like the rest of us, the players can't stop thinking about the Auburn game.
It was great to hear Wheeler say what I know every player is thinking when he admitted that he couldn't get the victory out of his mind.
"To be honest, I don't know what to do about it," Wheeler said. "It's an exciting win, beating Auburn for the first time in like 50 years, 60 years. I keep thinking about it. I've got a test in like four hours and I can't stop thinking about the game, but hopefully I'll get that taken care of."
Make sure to vote for Wheeler's touchdown as the Pontiac Game Changing Performance of the Week here.
